Creation

Bible Questions and Answers – Does God Have a Body?

“Brother Thurman: God is a Spirit, but doesn’t he have a shape or body parts, such as hands, face, eyes, ears, etc.? Are we not fashioned after Him?  D.W., TX”

God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24). “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” (Colossians 1:15). We can tell from these verses that God is fundamentally different from those He created. He is a spirit and is invisible. The Lord God “alone possess immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see” (1
Timothy 6:16). Obviously, God is not like the creation. After all, God existed before He created anything. That is, before there was matter, God existed. That means He is not made of matter and is not bound by physical limitations as we are.

We are told that God has a face (2 Chronicles 6:42), that He has hands (Isaiah 59:1), that he had a back, because Moses could not look God in the face and live, and instead could only glimpse the Lord’s back (Exodus 33:18-23). However, most of these references are probably using poetic license to try to make an unapproachable deity more approachable. We do the same when we speak of the face of the mountain, or the eyes of big brother, or the hands of industry. None of us really think a mountain has a face or that industry has literal hands or that the government has actual eyes. These are all phrases we use to make the unfathomable more fathomable.

Yes, we are indeed created in God’s image. (more…)

Blaring Bible Ignorance

Ever noticed anything unusual about the typical image of the Devil drawn by artists during the temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden?

Let me give you a small clue – the snake has no legs!

Why’s that an issue? Because his legs were “kicked out from under him” in God’s judgment after the sin had taken place, not before.

Now if the average person misses something so obvious right from the beginning, what else do you think escapes our attention?

That’s why proper Bible study (2 Timothy 2:15) helps to keep the apples with the apples and the oranges with the oranges when it comes to biblical knowledge. EA

So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”” (Genesis 3:14-15)

“Smart Mouth”

Anyone that is fascinated with nature is sure to believe that the Venus Fly Trap is one of the neatest plants to be found, and boy does this plant have one smart mouth!  God provided these plants with mouths that have little sensitive hairs inside of them.  These hairs cause the mouth of the plant to shut up tight when they are agitated in less than a second!  This plant’s mouth works exactly like God wanted it to.  There are a couple of lessons that we can learn from this plant.

First, we, unlike the plant don’t always use our mouths the way God intended for us to do.  We often say things that we shouldn’t.  The Holy Spirit, through James, says concerning the tongue, “With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.”  And also, “Does a spring bring forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?” (James 3: 9,11)

Sometimes the meanest things done are not things that are done at all, but instead are things that are said. It’s amazing how a body made up of about 206 bones can be controlled by something without a single one in it. (James 3:2-5)  Often the best of friendships and even marriages are ruined because of this sad fact.

The second and most useful thing that we can learn from God’s little creation is that when we become agitated we need to shut up our mouth tight.  Easier said than done isn’t it?  But none-the-less, it is something that we must learn to do.  Most especially I, as a person that used to speak my mind no matter the place or time, have had to wrestle with this.  Now as a Christian I must remember that Jesus said that I will have to answer “for every idle word spoken.” (Matthew 12:36)  When you think about that it can be a scary thought because an active mouth can shoot out a lot of idle words! Many of those “idle” words spoken in anger will have a loud echo on the Day of Judgment.  We will be a lot better off when we learn to keep our mouth shut until we can calm down.

The apostle Peter urges Christians to be like Jesus when he said, “that you should follow His steps…who, when reviled did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten….” (1st Peter 2: 21,23)

If you think that’s not a challenge then you’re stronger than I am, but it really is all up to me to decide just what kind of “smart mouth” I’m going to have. EA

Confused About Creation

There was a little boy who returned home from Sunday school very excited about the lesson on creation he was taught and he told his parents about all that he learned concerning Adam and Eve. A few days later, he came home from school apparently distressed about something. When his mother asked what was bothering him, he said, “Mom, my side hurts; I think I’m going to have a wife.”

I have heard a lot of jokes stemming from the Bible’s account of creation, but that one is probably the cutest. Life is an amazing thing. The Earth is an amazing place. The universe is an amazing space. God is an amazing Creator. From the billions of plants and animals to the billions of people and on up to the billions of the stars that are always out there, God has shown us His handiwork (Psalm 19:1).

Today, more than ever before, God can be seen in all of these things due to the increase of our technology. We can see the inner workings of plants, animals and people and see the heavens up close with our amazing microscopes and telescopes.

You would think that the amazing intricacies of life that we have discovered would convince even more people of the existence of a Grand Designer of life. Sadly this is not the case. Like the Bible says of the generations of old: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,” (Romans 1:22).

The biggest joke I have ever heard about the creation of life is the one that begins with “long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away there was a big explosion….” I guess the next time I want to build a house I can just stick some dynamite in a tree! But really, the only the thing sadder than an atheist denying the Bible’s account of creation is a self-confessing “Christian” that is “confused” about the first and second chapters of the great book of Genesis and its literal account of God’s creation of Adam and Eve.

Deny if they want, deny if you want – but God created Adam and Eve. I thoroughly believe that every person you see today came from one man and one woman. (more…)
