The number one cause of death for the last couple of generations in America has been heart disease. While physical death cannot be avoided (save Christ’s return), the problem with heart disease is that often it is something that results from an intentional lack of care and awareness on our own behalf. Sadly, physical heart disease has a spiritual counterpart.
Many of God’s people have given into, are suffering from or have died with spiritual heart disease (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 15:18-20). This is a condition that CAN BE AVOIDED in many of the same ways that physical heart disease can be. Consider these suggestions for a moment:
“Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:3,4). Our spiritual diet matters!
“For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance.” (1st Timothy 4:8,9). Our spiritual exercise matters!
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30). Our spiritual rest matters!
